MULTIMEDIA EXHIBITION
Multimedia Exhibition | Mega Livadi Serifos 1880-1960
During the years of modern mining activity on Serifos, the bay of Mega Livadi, located on the southwestern tip of the island, was at the heart of the mining operations. In this cove, sheltered from the strong northern winds, the mining company established its headquarters. From the late 19th century onwards, an entire workers' settlement gradually developed, featuring numerous houses, shops, restaurants, a police station, a chemistry laboratory, a hospital, a school, the emblematic ore loading bridge that still stands today, and the headquarters, a neoclassical building which is currently under restoration.
Aiming to preserve the village’s history and cultural heritage, the exhibition - hosted in the temporary exhibition space of the Archaeological Museum of Serifos - features extensive photographic material restored using artificial intelligence, part of which is being presented for the first time. It also includes digital copies from the local press of the period, archives from the Technological Park of Lavrio and the Municipality of Serifos and materials discovered in villagers’ personal collections. All additional audiovisual content is accessible via mobile devices through QR codes. The historical photographs are complemented by videos and an artistic sound installation which incorporates field recordings from Mega Livadi and algorithmic processes that run in real time on a microcomputer, creating a constantly evolving soundscape that accompanies the visitor.
The exhibition seeks to uncover and shed light on the forgotten recent past of Mega Livadi, helping it to better navigate its future as an integral part of Serifos’s broader historical journey. It marks the first attempt to highlight the history of the village's residents and their place.
